The Body & The Blood is a photographic response to the impending closure of Smithfield Meat Market in the heart of the City of London. Once a ‘smooth field’ outside of the city walls, animals have been traded at Smithfield for over 900 years, in a history characterised by both spirituality and violence - the two often intertwined. Honouring the market and those who work there, the work draws on a rich symbolism, to reflect not only on the upheaval inherent in the ‘progress’ of urban change, and the multitude of violences that Smithfield has witnessed, but also of a more universal suffering.
